With over 400 new patents and seven world records, it has not only fulfilled the bridge dream of generations and demonstrated Chinese resilience and wisdom to the world, but also established the "watertight integrity, 120-year service life" Chinese engineering standard.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

In reality, durability is the fundamental prerequisite for all bridge projects and the key to ensuring their quality and longevity. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was designed to meet a 120-year service life, withstand Category 16 typhoons, and resist magnitude 8 earthquakes. Consequently, its anti-corrosion system requirements are exceptionally stringent.

To enhance the bridge's corrosion resistance, the design team adopted a triple-method approach of "coating + cathodic protection + in-situ monitoring," which significantly reduces the electrochemical reaction rate between seawater and the bridge's metal materials, enabling the structure to achieve its 120-year design life.

Internal and External Coating of Steel Pipe Composite Piles

The coating used is a new generation of high-performance epoxy, which addresses durability issues by focusing on key performance indicators such as coating anti-permeability and cathodic disbondment resistance. By adjusting the coating formulation and improving the application process, researchers reduced the coating's water absorption and dissolution rates, effectively enhancing its anti-permeability capability and strengthening the bond between the coating and the metal. This has, to some extent, ensured the coating meets the 120-year durability design requirement, breaking the domestic "century convention" for major bridges.
